WHAT IS .XPANDER · PRODUCT & ARCHITECTURE OVERVIEW

What is .XPANDER?

.XPANDER (dotXPANDER) is a native Windows text expander, clipboard transformer, and file-dialog accelerator built in Rust and Slint.

.XPANDER runs invisibly in your Windows system tray, consuming ~4.6 MB of private RAM and 0.0% CPU at idle. Whether you are answering customer emails in Outlook, entering master data in a CRM system, writing code in VS Code, or chatting in Teams, .XPANDER gives you instant shortcut superpowers across every Windows application.

Zero telemetry, zero internet connections, and zero installation hassle. Your configuration lives in a clean, human-readable config.toml file (with optional AES-256-GCM encryption across config.toml and .xblob rich/image assets) that you can keep locally or sync across your PCs with OneDrive, Dropbox, or Google Drive.

Under the Hood: Two-Thread Lock-Free Architecture

Strict isolation between the real-time Win32 input hook and the Slint software-rendered UI guarantees that your typing never stutters.

REAL-TIME · ZERO HEAP ALLOCATION

Thread 1: Win32 Hook & Injection Engine

  • ▸ WH_KEYBOARD_LL low-level keyboard listener with 2–10 char circular KeyBuffer
  • ▸ Wait-free configuration reads via ArcSwap (6.26 ns lookup)
  • ▸ Atomic multi-format clipboard snapshot & restore pipeline (CF_UNICODETEXT, HTML, RTF, CF_DIB, PNG)
  • ▸ Dynamic date, time, ISO week & clipboard token evaluator
  • ▸ Out-of-process SetWinEventHook + IShellWindows COM inspector for Quick Switch file dialogs
  • ▸ Volatile RAM zeroization on inactivity timer (WM_TIMER), resize, and exit
CPU SOFTWARE RENDERED · ZERO GPU OVERHEAD

Thread 2: Slint UI & System Tray Manager

  • ▸ Frameless, DPI-aware ConfigWindow, TokensWindow, and Floating Search Palette
  • ▸ Uses Slint software renderer — no OpenGL, Vulkan, or Chromium GPU processes
  • ▸ On-demand background RGBA8 thumbnail & image preview decoding with K32EmptyWorkingSet RAM trim on close
  • ▸ System tray icon with Explorer crash-recovery watchdog and bidirectional Pause/Resume sync
  • ▸ Live in-settings column filter (🔍) and one-click buffer capacity alignment advisor
  • ▸ Instant runtime switching between English (EN) and Danish (DA) plus 3 visual themes
OUT-OF-THE-BOX PRODUCTIVITY

Ready Out of the Box: 13-Snippet Starter Pack

On a fresh installation, .XPANDER automatically provisions a curated starter catalog so you can test expansion immediately without blank-canvas paralysis—starting with typing .x to expand .XPANDER!

.x → .XPANDER
.ts → {iso_date} {time:HH:mm}
.sig → Multi-line signature
TOML CONFIGURATION

Clean, Transparent Configuration (config.toml)

When unencrypted, your settings and snippets live in standard TOML. Enable AES-256-GCM encryption with one click in Settings before syncing to cloud drives.

VERIFIED RESOURCE PROFILE & CRITERION BENCHMARKS

Why Native Rust Destroys Electron Utilities

Measured on Windows 11. Because .XPANDER sleeps on native Win32 message queues with zero background polling loops or garbage collection, it draws 0.0% CPU when you are not actively typing.

Resource consumption: .XPANDER vs. typical Web/Electron text expanders
Metric dotXPANDER (Native Rust) Typical Web / Electron Expanders
Idle CPU Usage 0.0% (event-driven, 0 ms idle CPU) 0.5% – 3.0% (timer loops / GC)
Private Committed Memory ~4.6 MB 120 MB – 250 MB
Working Set (RAM) ~12 MB (including OS DLLs) 180 MB – 350+ MB
